From 3 – 11 February 2019 we organize a tour to Ethiopia around the Hawassa Half Marathon, a running event in the tropical city of Hawassa, next to a beautiful lake with the same name. With the lake on as backdrop, you will run 22 kilometers in the cleanest city of Ethiopia. De tour is organized in cooperation with Ethiopian runners; they introduce you with the fascinating running culture of Ethiopia and guide special training sessions. The tour starts in the capital Addis Ababa, then we travel to the southern highlands and the great lakes of the Rift Valley. The tour is concluded with participation in Hawassa Half Marathon. Next to an introduction with running sport in Ethiopia, this tour offers encounters with the intriguing Ethiopian culture and history, and spectacular natural environments.

Anybody who likes to run and to ravel can participate in the tour. From experienced runners who are looking for a physical challenge and who want to push their limits, to leisure runners who do not compete on high level and are just as interested in traveling as in running. Our runner-guides will adapt to the level of each participant.

Saturday 2 February 2019
You arrive in Addis Ababa, the Capital city of Ethiopia. We will pick you up from the airport and take you to the Orange Lion Guesthouse, our comfortable base in the city.

If there is time we can show you some parts of the city. Meals are not included today.

Sunday 3 February 2019
In the morning you meet our runner-guides, these are professional and semi-professional Ethiopian athletes who will accompany us on our tour. They show us around and organize training sessions. After breakfast we go explore the city of Addis Ababa, we visit the National Museum, make a walk in the city, and visit an Ethiopian church. We end the day with a light running practice on Entoto Mountain, the highest point of Addis Ababa. With a beautiful view over the city as backdrop our runner guides will lead you in a running practice. In the evening we relax and dine in our guesthouse.

Monday 4 February 2019
In the morning we go to the town of Sululta, just outside Addis Ababa. It is a well-known training center for many local and international athletes, the circumstances for running are perfect. Our runner-guides will lead an intensive running practice, and don’t be surprised if you bump into an Olympic champion! The rest of the day we continue with our exploration of the city. We visit a former imperial palace and the Merkato Market, the largest market of Africa.  A lunch is provided and if you want you can participate in an Ethiopian dance workshop. Dance and music is an important part of Ethiopian culture, and our runner-guides will be happy to show you this! In the evening, we dine in our guesthouse and we will show you one of our social project called ‘Dialogue in Silence’. Deaf actors will introduce you with the fascinating world of Deaf Culture and Sign Language.

Tuesday 5 February 2019
After breakfast we will visit a local school where our partner NGO
carries out a sports project for children with a disability. Right after that we leave the city and drive south towards the Southern Ethiopian highlands, a region where many Ethiopian runners are from. After a few hours we arrive in Bekoji, also known as the ‘Town of Runners’. Many Ethiopian champions are from this village! We meet the local youth and coaches and participate in a late afternoon running practice.  We spend the night in a simple but proper guesthouse in the village, do not expect any luxury, but it is safe and clean. We eat together in a local restaurant.

Wednesday 6 February 2019
In the morning we participate in a running practice with the youth of Bekoji. With our runner-guides, and led by coaches of Bekoji, we are part of an intensive training in the forest. It will be a physical challenge, but also a beautiful experience. After breakfast there is time to see more of Bekoji. We visit young runners at their homes, most of them live together in small sheds far away from their families. They will share their dreams and ambitions with us. After lunch we leave Bekoji and drive further south to the Bale Mountains, one of the spectacular mountain ranges of Ethiopia.  On the way we enjoy the beautiful scenery and we make a short walk in a forest. We spend the night a simple but decent hotel on the foot of the mountains.

Thursday 7 February 2019
We spend a full day in the Bale Mountains. This National Park is is concentrated around a big mountain plateau that is located on more than 4000 meters ltitude. The nature has adapted to the high altitude with strange vegetation as result. The area looks like a moon landscape! The valleys however are covered with dense rainforest and is teamed with life. This is also the habitat of the Ethiopian Wolf, a very rare canine, but chances are good we will see them. We bring lunchboxes and spend a full day in the mountains. In the evening we dine in the restaurant of the hotel.

Friday 8 February 2019
We leave the Bale Mountains and drive towards Lake Hawassa, one of the great lakes of Ethiopia’s Rift Valley. On the way we make a stop in Shashamane, a town mainly known for its Rastafari community. Rastafari is a spiritual movement that considers the former Emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie I, as a dive being. Rastafari became known in the world through mainly Reggae Music and especially Bob Marley. Local Rastas will prepare a vegan lunch for us and a local musician will come to perform for us. In the afternoon we continue to Hawassa where we stay in a luxury resort with a swimming pool and views over the lake. You can relax and dine at the resort.

Saturday 9 February 2019
In the morning we explore the lively fish market of Hawassa and we make a boat ride looking for hippos and other animals. There is an 80% chance we see hippos from close by. The rest of the day there is no program, you can relax at the resort or go your own way.

In the late afternoon our runner-guides will lead a running practice at the shores of the lake. Surrounded by monkeys and tropical birds you can prepare yourself for the Half Marathon.

Note: because of the free afternoon there is no lunch provided today.

Sunday 10 February 2019
Today we participate in the Half Marathon of Hawassa. Hawassa is located on relative low altitude (1700 meters) and has flat surface all over the route. The weather conditions are usually very good at this time of the year. We will bring you to the starting point and collect you after the race. The rest of the day you can relax at the resort.

Monday 11 February 2019

We bring you back to Addis Ababa where you check in for the flight back home. You can also decide to stay longer in Ethiopia and see more of the country.
