Frequently we organize ‘Experience Travels’ to Ethiopia for students and professionals from all over the world. The tours are aimed at a meaningful exploration of a specific subject in Ethiopia, in this case: nursing and healthcare. We invite students and professionals to come to Ethiopia and explore this subject from the Ethiopian perspective. We visit hospitals, clinics, colleges, rehabilitation centers, etc. We meet local professionals and students who explain about their daily activities and give an insight in how this profession is carried out in this country. These activities are combined with cultural activities and visits to areas of natural beauty. Next to a reconnaissance of the profession we offer a broad introduction to Ethiopian history, culture, and nature.

Exchange program

The aim of this program is to establish a meaningful exchange between relevant networks in Ethiopia and ‘the West’. As a developing country, Ethiopia lacks all kinds of materials, and also knowledge. With these tours we bring financial and material contributions to local partners, and we try to establish an exchange of knowledge and experience between students and professionals from all over the world, which we believe can contribute substantially to the development of the healthcare sector in Ethiopia. On the other hand, we believe the visiting students and professions can learn a lot from the Ethiopians. For example; the positive attitude, commitment to the profession, and the creativity people have, can be very inspiring! We believe these tours can contribute greatly to the personal development of professionals and students from ‘the West’.

Cooperation Dires for Development NGO

The tours are organized in direct cooperation with the Ethiopian NGO Dires for Development. They are specialized in social programs for people who have a disability, especially children. They are responsible for the execution of the program and get paid for their services. In the way they generate income, and that helps to sustain their activities. You will be introduced to the NGO and their projcets when you are in Ethiopia.

Monday 22 October / 22 April 2019

Today we visit a local clinic and a hospital. We explore what healthcare looks like in a remote African rural area. People are very poor in this part of Ethiopia, and that is reflected in the state of healthcare. There is a lack of materials, medicine, money, and knowledge. Yet, the medical professionals work with passion and try their best to alleviate medical needs for the people in the region. It might be a confronting experience, the difference of the level of healthcare between what we are used to in the West and what people have here, is striking. But we make sure the local clinics and hospital benefit from our visit and we try to support them on a structural level. In the evening we will reflect with the group on the experiences.

Today is also a market day, and if there is time we will visit the lively local market.
